Women in region march against violence

MARCH 8 (The Bulletin) — Women in Central Asia and the South Caucasus’ biggest cities marched in protests against domestic violence on International Women’s Day. The region, known for its unreformed macho overtones, has one of the worst records in the world for domestic violence. Activists have said the coronavirus lockdowns have exacerbated the issue. Last year the women’s rights march in Bishkek was attacked by masked men. This year it passed off without incident.

Azerbaijan nears completion of hazelnut processing plant

MARCH 7 (The Bulletin) — Azerbaijan has nearly finished constructing a hazelnut processing plant that will help it boost exports, as Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev ordered in 2017, media reported. The processing plant will create 150 jobs and will be able to process 7,000 tonnes of hazelnuts per year. Azerbaijan has been trying to boost non-oil exports.

Car imports to Azeraijan rise despite coronavirus pandemic

MARCH 4 2021 (The Bulletin) — Despite the damage to Azerbaijan’s economy from the coronavirus pandemic, car imports increased last year to 53,729 from 47,709, a rise of 12%, Safar Mehdiyev, chairman of the Azerbaijani state customs committee, said. This is double the number of car imports into Azerbaijan compared to 2018.

Azerbaijan’s F1 GP to go ahead without spectators

MARCH 3 2021  (The Bulletin) — Azerbaijani officials said that the F1 Grand Prix, touted as the highlight of Azerbaijan’s sporting calendar since it was inaugurated in 2016, will go ahead this year but without any spectators. Last year, like many of the F1 Grand Prix, the race was cancelled because of the coronavirus. The race, through the streets of Baku, is considered a fine city circuit. It is scheduled for June 6.

Azerbaijan to build hotel online booking site for domestic tourists

MARCH 3 2021 (The Bulletin) — Azerbaijan’s government launched a tender to design and build the first domestic online hotel booking platform, media reported. With international travel still restricted, Azerbaijan’s government wants to focus on domestic tourists. The system will only be available to Azerbaijani citizens and foreigners with residency permits.

Azerbaijan and Turkey in talks on Nagorno-Karabakh film

MARCH 2 2021 (The Bulletin) — Looking to squeeze more propaganda out of its victory in a war last year for control of the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijani officials said that they are already in talks with Turkey to produce a film on the war. In an interview with a Turkish TV channel, Azerbaijani culture minister Anar Kerimov said that it was important to “celebrate the courage of the soldiers”.

Azebaijan’s Buta Airways to start flying to Tbilisi

MARCH 1 2021 (The Bulletin) — Buta Airways, the government-owned Azerbaijani low cost airline, said that it would resume its flight schedule between Baku and Tbilisi on March 19, an important step towards normalising aviation routes in the South Caucasus. AZAL, the Azerbaijani flag carrier, set up Buta Airways in Sept. 2017 to fly mainly to Turkey and Russia.

Turkish media company takes over running of Azerbaijani lottery

FEB. 27 2021 (The Bulletin) — Turkey’s Demiroren Holding, best known for its Turkish media business that includes the Hurriyet newspaper and CNN Turk, has taken over the running of Azerbaijan’s national lottery for at least the next decade, media reported. Turkish businesses have been moving into Azerbaijan heavily over the past three or four months, since Turkey helped Azerbaijan defeat Armenia for control of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Azerbaijan says it will build a floating solar power station

FEB. 5 2021 (The Bulletin) — Azerbaijan said that it will build a floating power station with a capacity of 100kW on Boyuksor Lake near Baku, part of its drive to ramp up power production. It named Spain’s Gamma Solutions as the main contractor for the project. Azerbaijan, like other countries in the FSU, has been trying to boost power generation capacity to match a surge in demand.

Italian company wins Heydar Aliyev refinery update project

FEB. 3 2021 (The Bulletin) — Italian engineering company Maire Tecnimont said that it had won a tender in Azerbaijan to modernise part of the Heydar Aliyev oil refinery outside Baku. It said that the new project is worth $160m and will take up to three years to complete. Azerbaijan, like its neighbours, is investing in power generation and refining capabilities, creating opportunities for Western contractors.
