Uzbek data shows industrial growth

JULY 22 2021 (The Bulletin) — Data published by Uzbekistan’s State Statistics Committee said that output at Uzbek industries was 8.5% higher in the first six months of the year compared to the same period in 2020. Most metrics in the Statistic Committee’s twice-a-year data release showed that Uzbek the economy was growing. The one sector that didn’t show much of an increase was construction, a key driver of the economy, which showed growth compared to the same period in 2020 of just 0.1%.

Putin wants more aviation cooperation with Central Asia

JULY 20 2021 (The Bulletin) — In a clear pitch for Russia’s aviation business, Russian Pres. Vladimir Putin said that he wanted to deepen Russia’s cooperation in the aviation sector with other member states of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). Mr Putin was speaking at the opening of the MAKS 2021, air show in Zhukovsky, Russia.  The EAEU includes Belarus, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.

Uzekistan to set up electric scooter production site

MARCH 5 2021 (The Bulletin) — Uzbekistan will set up a factory producing electric scooters, media reported. Details were scant but reports said that the scooters would be built at a factory in the Kokand special economic zone and that the unnamed business hoped to produce 4,500 annually, rising to 23,500 by the end of 2022.

Belarussia’s MAZ to set up assembly plant in Uzbekistan

MARCH 5 (The Bulletin) — Uzbek and Belorussian officials agreed a deal for MAZ, the state-owned Belorussian lorry and bus producer, to set up an assembly plant in Uzbekistan. Since the death of former president Islam Karimov in 2016, Uzbekistan tried to rival Kazakhstan as a base for car and vehicle manufacturing in Central Asia.

Manufacturing confidence in Kazakhstan is recovering

MARCH 1 2021  (The Bulletin) — Kazakhstan’s Tengri Partners/IHS Market PMI index, a measure of manufacturing confidence, increased to 48.5 in February from a nine month low of 45.6 in January. Explaining the data, Anuar Ushbayev, managing partner at Tengri Partners, said that sentiment reflected a slowing of the economic downturn linked to the coronavirus pandemic.

Kazakhstan Railways to sell wagon manufacturing site

JULY 24 (The Bulletin) — Kazakhstan Temir Zholy plans to sell its Tulpar Wagon manufacturing plant, a factory that Kazakh officials often hold up as one of the most advanced in the country. Media reported that a joint venture between Spain’s Talgo and Kazakhstan Temir Zholy ended in 2019. Kazakhstan Temir Zholy did not say how much they expected to raise from the sale.

Kazakh car factory to start producing Chevrolets

APRIL 1 (The Bulletin) — Kazakh car factory SaryarkaAutoProm in Kostanay launched the start of production of Chevrolet cars under licence from Uzbekistan’s state-owned UzAuto. Company officials said that it wanted to produce 26,000 cars in the first year, rising to 100,000 in later years. The expansion into Kazakhstan was planned by UzAuto before the spread of the coronavirus.

Kazakhstan to start assembling helicopters from Russia

DEC. 15 2019 (The Bulletin) — Kazakhstan Engineering will begin assembling 17 Russian Mi-171 transport helicopters next year, the Kazakh government said in a statement. All 17 helicopters will be manufactured in Russia and will be bought by either Kazakhstan’s National Guard or its Emergencies Ministry. Kazakhstan Engineering described the deal as a “significant step in the development of Kazakhstan’s helicopter industry”.

Italian ceramic maker to move production to Armenia

FEB. 4 (The Conway Bulletin) — Italian Stoneware signed a deal to move part of its production for its Ceramisia brand to Armenia. Under the deal, ceramic pots will carry the slogan: “Designed in Italy, made in Armenia”. Media reports said that 150 jobs will be created in Armenia by the move.

Kazakhstan increases manufactured goods exports

SEPT. 21  (The Bulletin) — Kazakhstan has increased exports of manufacturing goods by 28% in the first six months of the year compared to the same period last year, media quoted development minister Zhenis Kasymek as saying. One of the biggest boosts to the $7.5b worth of manufacturing exports was from the car industry. Lada Niva, which makes cars in Oskemen, started exports to China and the UAE.
