Belarussia’s MAZ to set up assembly plant in Uzbekistan

MARCH 5 (The Bulletin) — Uzbek and Belorussian officials agreed a deal for MAZ, the state-owned Belorussian lorry and bus producer, to set up an assembly plant in Uzbekistan. Since the death of former president Islam Karimov in 2016, Uzbekistan tried to rival Kazakhstan as a base for car and vehicle manufacturing in Central Asia.

Car imports to Azeraijan rise despite coronavirus pandemic

MARCH 4 2021 (The Bulletin) — Despite the damage to Azerbaijan’s economy from the coronavirus pandemic, car imports increased last year to 53,729 from 47,709, a rise of 12%, Safar Mehdiyev, chairman of the Azerbaijani state customs committee, said. This is double the number of car imports into Azerbaijan compared to 2018.

Kazakh car factory to start producing Chevrolets

APRIL 1 (The Bulletin) — Kazakh car factory SaryarkaAutoProm in Kostanay launched the start of production of Chevrolet cars under licence from Uzbekistan’s state-owned UzAuto. Company officials said that it wanted to produce 26,000 cars in the first year, rising to 100,000 in later years. The expansion into Kazakhstan was planned by UzAuto before the spread of the coronavirus.

France’s Gruau considers Uzbek business

JAN. 17 (The Conway Bulletin) — French vehicle conversion company Gruau is considering setting up a plant in Uzbekistan, media reported. It reported that Gruau’s vice-president for international development, Sylvain Sene, had been in the country scoping out the prospect. Gruau is considered a world leader in converting vehicles for specialist uses such as for disabled people and the security forces.

Car sales in Kazakhstan rise

DEC. 27 (The Conway Bulletin) — Car sales in Kazakhstan increased by 25.7% between January and November in 2018 compared to the same period in 2018, industry groups said. The data is more evidence that Kazakh consumers are gaining confidence after an economic downturn in 2015-17 triggered by a collapse in oil prices and recession in Russia. Of the 52, 467 cars sold during this period, nearly half were built in Kazakhstan.

Uzbek truck plant to increase production

OCT. 12 (The Conway Bulletin) – UzAutoTrailer plans to increase the capacity of its truck-manufacturing plant to 3,000 vehicles per year up from the current 1,500 vehicles, Uzbek media reported. The plant opened this year in the city of Jambay, near Samarkand, and currently produces Russian Kamaz trucks.

Turkish company to open bus assembly plant in Dushanbe

JAN. 29 (The Conway Bulletin) – Turkey’s AKIA buses said that it is opening an assembly plant in Dushanbe. The factory is a joint-venture between AKIA and a Tajik government company and will have a production capacity of 250-300 buses per year. There are few manufacturing plants in Tajikistan.

Kazakhstan increases manufactured goods exports

SEPT. 21  (The Bulletin) — Kazakhstan has increased exports of manufacturing goods by 28% in the first six months of the year compared to the same period last year, media quoted development minister Zhenis Kasymek as saying. One of the biggest boosts to the $7.5b worth of manufacturing exports was from the car industry. Lada Niva, which makes cars in Oskemen, started exports to China and the UAE.

Joint Iran-Azerbaijan car plant to be finished soon

SEPT. 13 2017 (The Conway Bulletin) — The construction of a car-making joint-venture factory between Iran and Azerbaijan will be finished shortly, media quoted deputy Azerbaijani economy minister Sahil Babayev as saying. He said that the first cars of the JV between Azerbaijan’s AzEuroCar and Iran’s Khorodo would roll off the plant next year. It will have a capacity of 10,000 units. Azerbaijan has been looking at ways to boost its non-oil industrial output.

AllurGroup to send cars to Tajikistan

JUNE 24 2017 (The Bulletin) — Kazakh company AllurGroup has started shipping cars to Dushanbe to form a fleet of taxis for the Tajik capital. The $600,000 deal for 55 Chinese-designed JAC S3s is important as it will keep jobs at the Kostanai-based SaryarkaAvtoProm. The Kazakh car making sector has been under pressure in the current economic downturn.
