EU signs deal with Uzbekistan to develop “critical raw materials”

APRIL 5 2024 (The Bulletin) — The EU signed a deal with Uzbekistan to develop “critical raw material” (CRM) supply chains. The deal puts the EU into direct competition with China which has already signed uranium mining deals with Uzbekistan this year. The EU has been signing CRM deals since 2021 and already has an agreement signed with Kazakhstan.

Kazatomprom says will reduce output in 2021

FEB. 1 2021 (The Bulletin) — In production guidance for 2021, Kazakh uranium producer Kazatomprom said that it would continue to reduce output in line with a plan put forward in 2018 to boost uranium prices. It also said that its output had been hit by the coronavirus pandemic and that it had been forced to suspend production at two sites in Turkestan, south Kazakhstan. Kazatomprom has a listing on the London Stock Exchange and is the world’s biggest uranium miner.

Coronavirus forces closure of Kazatomprom mines

JAN. 20 2021 (The Bulletin) — Kazatomprom, Kazakhstan’s majority state-owned uranium miner, suspended operations at two of its mines in the south of the country after workers tested positive for the coronavirus. Kazatomprom didn’t say how many workers had contracted the coronavirus at its sites in the Turkestan region, nor for how long they will be closed for. Kazatomprom also didn’t say what effect the closures would have on output.

Uzbekistan to supply Japan with uranium worth $1b

JAN. 8 2020 (The Bulletin) — Uzbekistan signed a deal with Japan to supply uranium worth $1b to Japan between 2023 and 2030, a deal that highlights Uzbekistan’s status as one of the world’s top uranium producers. Neighbouring Kazakhstan is considered to be the world’s biggest uranium producer.

Kazakh uranium production rises by 5%

DEC. 19 2019 (The Bulletin) — Kazakhstan, the world’s biggest uranium miner, said that it had increased its uranium production by 5% this year. Previously Kazakhstan said that it would aim to limit its uranium production in an effort to give stagnant prices a boost.

Kyrgyzstan bans uranium mining

DEC. 16 2019 (The Bulletin) — Kyrgyz President Sooronbai Jeenbekov signed into law a decree that bans uranium mining. Earlier this year protests against uranium mining started up in Bishkek. Uranium waste heaps, a legacy of Soviet mining, scar parts of the Kyrgyz countryside.

Second batch of low-enriched uranium arrives at IAEA site in Kazakhstan

DEC. 10  2019 (The Bulletin) — A purpose-built storage facility managed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in eastern Kazakhstan received its second and final consignment of low-enriched uranium (LEU). The site in Ust-Kamenogorsk was set up to allow countries developing nuclear power to buy fuel for their power stations safely.

France’s Orano signs deal to mine for uranium in Uzbekistan

DEC. 3 (The Bulletin) — French nuclear company Orano signed a deal with the Uzbek government to set up a joint-venture called Nurlikum Mining. Nurlikum, which is 51% owned by Orano and 49% owned by the Uzbek government, will mine for uranium in the Djengeldi area in the province of Kyzylkum.

Senior Central Bank official named head of Kazakhstan’s Kazatomprom

AUG. 31 2017 (The Conway Bulletin) — Galymzhan Pirmatov, formerly deputy chairman of the Kazakh Central Bank, was named head of Kazatompron, Kazakhstan’s atomic energy agency, replacing Askar Zhumagaliyev who was made a deputy PM earlier in August (Aug. 31). Kazatomprom is a high profile company in Kazakhstan, with Pres. Nursultan Nazarbayev pushing nuclear power and uranium mining. Mr Pirmatov has previously been a VP at Kazatomprom.

Kazakhstan to open uranium bank

MAY 15 2017 (The Conway Bulletin) — Kazakhstan will open its much-vaunted uranium bank on Aug. 17, media reported quoting MP Kanat Bozumbaev. The uranium bank has been authorized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and is designed to act as a resource for countries that want to develop nuclear energy. Kazakhstan is the world’s largest uranium producer.
