High-speed train arrives in Uzbekistan

JULY 23 2011 (The Conway Bulletin) – Uzbekistan Railway took delivery of a Spanish- made high speed train that will travel the 344km between the capital Tashkent and Samarkand in two hours, it said in a statement. Uzbekistan ordered two trains from Spanish manufacturer Patentes Talgo in Jan. 2010 reportedly for 38m euros.

Azerbaijan funding for railway through Georgia

MAY 31 2011 (The Conway Bulletin) – Completion of a railway linking Baku to Kars in eastern Turkey via Tbilisi inched closer after Georgia’s parliament approved a $575m loan from Azerbaijan to build a section of the track, local media reported. The rail link bypasses Armenia and will transport goods between Azerbaijan and Turkey. It was supposed to open in 2010.

Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan design new transport corridor

APRIL 25 2011 (The Conway Bulletin) – Senior officials from Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Qatar, Oman and Iran signed an agreement to link their railway systems to create a transport corridor between Central Asia and the Persian Gulf. The deal potentially creates another important export route for oil and gas.

Armenia improves links with Iran

MARCH 27 2011 (The Conway Bulletin) – Underlining Armenia’s strengthening ties with Iran, President Serzh Sargsyan joined Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Tehran to celebrate the Persian new year. Iran and Armenia are building a rail link and an oil pipeline. Leaders from Afghanistan, Iraq, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan also joined the celebrations.

ADB lends $125m to Turkmenistan for Gulf railway

MARCH 15 2011 (The Conway Bulletin) — The Asian Development Bank (ADB)  agreed to lend Turkmenistan $125m for work on building part of a railway that will link Central Asia with the Persian Gulf. This is the first ADB loan to Turkmenistan  and shows businesses are increasingly willing to do deals with Ashgabat.

Kazakhstan signs more deals with China

FEB. 22 2011 (The Conway Bulletin) – On a three-day trip to Beijing, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev agreed a series of deals with Chinese President Hu Jintao. The deals included Chinese funds for a new Astana-Almaty high speed rail link, a uranium supply deal and various oil and gas projects.

Kazakhstan signs $2b with France

OCT. 27 2010 (The Conway Bulletin) — Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev signed deals worth over $2b with French President Nikolas Sarkozy in Paris. Aerospace manufacturer EADS will form a joint venture to build helicopters in Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan will buy 300 trains from engineering groups Alstom and nuclear energy company KazAtomProm will form a joint venture with Areva.
