India wants to boost cotton imports from Kazakhstan

APRIL 20/21 2017 (The Conway Bulletin) — At a meeting in the south Kazakh city of Shymkent, Kazakh and Indian officials pledged to increase cooperation in the cotton trade. Indian businessmen said that they wanted to increase the supply of cotton from Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan has been trying to develop its cotton sector over the past few years in a drive to move away from rely too heavily on the oil and gas sector.

Armenian fruit firms sign deal with the UAE

MARCH 29 2017 (The Conway Bulletin) — Two fruit and vegetable companies in Armenia have signed supply deals with six luxury hotels in the UAE, media reported. The Armenian companies, Tamara Fruit and Natural Organic Healthy Food Company, signed the deals earlier in March at a UAE-Armenia trade meeting in the Dubai. This sort of deal is important for Armenia which is looking to boost its exports.

Oil price drop hits Kazakh export value hard

FEB. 7 2017 (The Conway Bulletin) — The value of Kazakhstan’s exports fell by 20% in 2016, the Central Bank said, reflecting just how heavily the drop in oil prices has hit the country. It said that exports dropped to $37.2b. In 2016, the average price of a barrel of Brent oil was $42.80. In 2015 it had been $50.80. This year, oil prices have hovered around $55/barrel.

Kazakhstan Caspian pipeline exports increase

JAN. 9 2017 (The Conway Bulletin) — Exports via the Caspian Pipeline, which pumps oil from western Kazakhstan, around the Caspian Sea to the Russian Black Sea port of Novorossiisk, rose by 4% in 2016, data released by the pipeline’s owner the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) showed. CPC’s main client is the Tengiz field in Kazakhstan. CPC’s biggest shareholders are Russia with a 24% stake, Kazakhstan with a 20.75% stake and Chevron with a 15% stake.

Georgian Shilda to export 5m bottles of wine

JAN. 12 2017 (The Conway Bulletin) — Shilda Wines, owned by former Georgian economy minister Vano Chkhartishvili MP, has made a deal to export 5m bottles of wine to China over the next three years. The deal is the largest ever struck by a wine producer with China. It highlights how important China has become to the Georgian wine market. China is the third biggest Georgian wine importer after Russia and Ukraine.

Fruit exports rise in Azerbaijan

JAN. 12 2017 (The Conway Bulletin) — Azerbaijan’s agricultural exports in the first 11 months of 2016 totalled $381m, a rise of 21.6% from 2015, the fruit-inform.com website reported. Most of the export increase was in fruit and vegetables. Azerbaijan is a major regional fruit and vegetable exporter although its value pales in comparison to oil and gas export volumes. Still, although the volume is small, it is also important. Azerbaijan’s government has said that it wants to diversify the country’s economy.

Kazakh presenter resigns after fake news

DEC. 20 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) — Ruslan Smykov, a presenter with the Kazakh TV news channel First Channel Eurasia, resigned after he broadcast a fake news interview with a Russian TV host. It’s unclear why Mr Smykov broadcast the fake interview but the incident does highlight the weak editorial control in the Kazakh media.

Azerbaijan exports oil to Belarus

NOV. 1 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) — Azerbaijan sent 84,700 tonnes of oil to Belarus, the country’s first commercial energy exports to Belarus since short-lived swaps in 2010/11. Belneftekhim, the Belarusian buyer, will use Azerbaijani crude at its Mozyr refinery. Belarus is actively seeking alternative suppliers of oil as Russian shipments have failed to meet domestic demand. Azerbaijan’s oil was sent through Georgia’s Supsa port to Odessa in Ukraine and then on to Belarus.

Georgia’s trade with Russia rises

OCT. 16 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) — Georgia’s trade turnover with Russia continued to rise as relations between the two neighbours improves. Geostat, the state statistics agency, said that exports to Russia increased by nearly 18% to $612m in the first nine months of the year and imports from Russia were up nearly 15% at $480m.

Trade turnover improves in Armenia

OCT. 4 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) – Armenia’s Statistics Committee said that trade turnover improved during the first eight months of the year, compared to last year. Exports increased by 19% to $1.1b, while imports decreased by 2% to just below $2b, reducing the country’s trade deficit. Trade with CIS countries increased, while it remained flat with EU countries.
