Kazakhstan accused Kashagan of fraud

NOV. 19 2010 (The Conway Bulletin) – Kazakhstan accused Agip, a unit of Italian energy company Eni, of a $110m fraud at the Kashagan oil field in the Caspian Sea by inflating development costs. Eni’s Agip declined to comment. It is the leader of the consortium developing Kashagan, Kazakhstan’s biggest oil field.

Turkmenistan wants to supply Nabucco

NOV. 19 2010 (The Conway Bulletin) – Turkmenistan has won the support of neighbouring countries to build a gas pipeline under the Caspian Sea, said deputy PM Baymyrad Khozhamuhamedov. He also said Turkmenistan would be able to supply the EU-backed Nabucco pipeline project with gas.

Kyrgyzstan cancels gold mining contract

NOV. 22 2010 (The Conway Bulletin) – Kyrgyzstan cancelled a contract to develop its second largest gold deposit signed in 2006 between the state gold mining company and an Austrian company, Reuters reported. Kyrgyzstan said the consortium had failed to develop infrastructure as part of an agreed $200m deal. It plans to re-auction the tender.

Turkish President visits Turkmenistan

NOV. 11/12 2010 (The Conway Bulletin) – Continuing a busy diplomatic period, Turkmen President Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov hosted talks with Turkish President Abdullah Gul on future energy supplies. Turkey needs extra supplies for the EU-backed Nabucco pipeline which will carry gas from Turkey to Europe.

Germany wants child labour investigated in Uzbekistan

NOV. 9 2010 (The Conway Bulletin) – Germany’s human rights commissioner called on the International Labour Organisation, a UN agency, to investigate Uzbekistan for using child labour to pick its cotton harvest. This is the sharpest criticism by a leading European figure of Uzbekistan’s alleged use of child labour. Uzbekistan has previously promised to stop the practice.

Kazakhstan’s grain harvest drops 31%

NOV. 3 2010 (The Conway Bulletin) – In 2010 Kazakhstan harvested 13.9m tonnes of grain down from 22.7m tonnes in 2009, a senior official from the Kazakh ministry of agriculture said. This represents a drop of 31%. Droughts have reduced grain harvest this year throughout the world.

Foreign firms in Kazakhstan may have to use local banks

NOV. 2 2010 (The Conway Bulletin) — Kazakhstan is considering introducing regulations to require foreign companies working in Kazakhstan to deposit 35% of their savings in Kazakh banks, Berik Kamaliyev, deputy minister of trade and industry, told a government meeting. He said the aim was to bolster the Kazakh banking sector.

Kazmunaigas looks for buyers for $1.5b bond

NOV. 3. 2010 (The Conway Bulletin) — Kazakhstan’s state oil and gas company Kazmunaigas started looking for potential buyers for its 11-year $1.5b Eurobond with an estimated yield of 6.75%. This is the first bond in a series of offerings that Kazakhstan hopes will raise $7.5b to invest back into oil and gas projects.

Russian Pres. Medvedev visits Turkmenistan

OCT. 21 2010 (The Conway Bulletin) — Russia’s President Dmitri Medvedev visited Ashgabat for talks with Turkmen leader Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov focused on gas contracts. Mr Medvedev said that due to low global demand, Gazprom did not need to restore its 40b cubic metres (bcm) annual order for Turkmen gas which it cut to about 11bcm after an argument over pricing in 2009.

Kazakh government plans $15.6b industrial investment

OCT. 26 2010 (The Conway Bulletin) — Kazakhstan plans to spend $15.6b on
industrial development between 2011 and 2013, PM Karim Massimov told his Nur Otan party according to his website. Transport and infrastructure will receive $6.8b.
