Kyrgyz president sacks Prosecutor-General

MARCH 31 2011 (The Conway Bulletin) – Kyrgyzstan’s President Roza Otunbayeva sacked the Kyrgyz Prosecutor-General Kubatbek Baibolov over links to a corruption scandal centred on the privatisation of mobile operator MegaCom. Mr Baibolov denies the allegations. The next day a row in parliament over the scandal between two deputies triggered a brief fight.

Turkmenistan suspends largest mobile operator

DEC. 21 2010 (The Conway Bulletin) – Turkmenistan suspended the operations of a local subsidiary of Russian mobile operator MTS for one month. Media reported around 80% of Turkmenistan’s mobile phone users have a contract with Barash Communications Technologies Inc., the MTS subsidiary. The Turkmen government did not give a reason for the suspension.
