Political divide in Georgia worsens

FEB. 8 2013 (The Conway Bulletin) – Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili was forced to change the venue of his annual state-of-the-nation address after scuffles between his supporters and supporters of rival, PM Bidzina Ivanishvili, broke out in front of the national library. The political divide in Georgia appears to be worsening.

Georgian prosecutors accuse mayor of corruption

FEB. 5 2013 (The Conway Bulletin) – Georgian prosecutors accused the mayor of Tbilisi, Gigi Ugulava, of organising a fake job scheme which siphoned $3.25 million from the city’s budget into the coffers of the United National Movement party (UNM), the political party of President Mikheil Saakashvili. UNM officials says they have been unfairly harassed by prosecutors since losing a parliamentary election in October.

Georgia sells Borjomi

JAN. 28 2013 (The Conway Bulletin) – Alfa Group, the investment company of Russian billionaire Mikhail Fridman, is close to securing a deal to buy Borjomi, Georgia’s iconic brand of fizzy water, Media reported. The Russian business newspaper Kommersant reported that Alfa Group had agreed to buy a controlling stake in Borjomi for $300m.

JAN. 20 2013 (The Conway Bulletin) – Roughly 1,000 people protested outside Georgia’s presidential palace to demand that President Mikheil Saakashvili resign, one of the biggest political demonstrations since a parliamentary election in October. Georgians are due to vote in a presidential election in Oct. 2013.

Georgia shifts parliament, again

DEC. 29 2012 (The Conway Bulletin) – David Usupashvili, speaker of Georgia’s parliament, has suggested that the national legislature may move back to Tbilisi as early as spring 2013, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported. Since October 2012, Georgia’s parliament has been based in a new building in Kutaisi, 230km from Tbilisi.
