Kazakhstan’s Karachaganak gas deal approaches

DEC. 9 2011 (The Conway Bulletin) – Kazakhstan and the foreign energy companies in the Karachaganak gas project (BG Group, Eni, Chevron and Lukoil) are close to resolving their long-running dispute, sources told Reuters. The sources said Kazakhstan would pay $1b for a 10% stake in exchange for dropping outstanding tax claims.

Azerbaijan delays pipeline project decision

DEC. 12 2011 (The Conway Bulletin) – Azerbaijan delayed backing one of three proposed projects to transport gas from the Caspian Sea to Europe. A decision had been expected by the end of 2011 but will now be made by March 2012, said the head of state oil energy company SOCAR, Rovnag Abdullayev. The three projects are Nabucco, Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TANAP) and Interconnector Turkey-Greece-Italy.

Turkmenistan vows to increase supplies to China

NOV. 23 2011 (The Conway Bulletin) – In Beijing, Turkmen President Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov and his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao agreed to increases gas supplies to China from Turkmenistan by 60%. If all goes to plan, Turkmenistan will pump 65b cubic metres per year to China — around half its total annual gas needs.

Russia questions Turkmenistan’s gas reserves

NOV. 21 2011 (The Conway Bulletin) – Russia’s Gazprom accused Turkmenistan of overstating its gas reserves, triggering an angry response from Turkmen officials. Relations between the two countries have soured in the last couple of years due to rows over gas prices and Turkmenistan’s plans to diversify its gas export routes away from Russia.

Turkmenistan seals gas deal with Pakistan

NOV. 15 2011 (The Conway Bulletin) – On a trip to Islamabad, Turkmenistan’s President Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov agreed a deal with Pakistan for the price of gas for a proposed pipeline running from Turkmenistan through Afghanistan, Pakistan and on to India, Turkmenistan’s state newspaper reported. The deal is seen as vital for pushing the so-called TAPI pipeline forward.

Turkmen president pledges support for pipeline to Europe

NOV. 3 2011 (The Conway Bulletin) – At a conference in Ashgabat, Turkmen President Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov said he supported building a pipeline from the Caspian Sea to Europe, media reported. Mr Berdymukhamedov’s statement is a boost for the EU-back Nabucco pipeline which wants to secure gas from Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan-Turkey gas deal opens route to Europe

OCT. 25 2011 (The Conway Bulletin) – After two years of negotiations, Azerbaijan and Turkey signed a deal which will allow gas from the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea to flow to Europe through the Turkish pipeline system. The deal will reduce Europe’s reliance on Russian gas and will open up the so-called southern energy corridor.

Austrian president visits Turkmenistan to win support for Nabucco

Auditors say Turkmenistan holds even more gas
