Georgia’s trade balance worsens

SEPT. 13 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) – Georgia’s foreign trade balance worsened, as imports increased and exports decreased in the first eight months of 2016 compared to the same period last year, the Statistics Committee said. Exports fell by 10% to $1.3b, while imports rose to $6.1b, a 23% jump.

Trade turnover rises in Armenia

JULY 19 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) — Armenia’s Statistics Committee said that trade turnover increased by 2.7% in H1 2016, compared to the same period last year, pushed up by a boost in exports. Exports grew by 16.7% to $815m, while imports decreased by 3.7% to $1.46b. A weak dram has made Armenian goods cheaper for exports.

Kazakhstan imposes export ban

JUNE 29 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) – Kazakhstan’s government imposed an export ban on ferrous and non- ferrous metals until the end of the year, to avoid shortages of scrap metal in the country. PM Karim Massimov said the shortage could prevent Kazakhstan from reaching its industrial goals. Kazakhstan plans to increase production of metals by 10% this year. Last year, production fell by 2.5%.

Kazakhstan lifts ban on potato import from Kyrgyzstan

JUNE 1 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) — Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev lifted a ban on the import of potatoes from Kyrgyzstan after meeting with his Kyrgyz counterpart Almazbek Atambayev in Astana. Kazakh authorities had banned Kyrgyz potatoes in early May due to an outbreak of Globod- era rostochiensis, a pest. The Kazakh regulatory agency said it will continue to monitor the presence of the pest in the following months.

Armenian exports grow

MAY 20 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) — Trade turnover grew in Armenia during the first four months of 2016, compared to the previous year. Exports grew by 21.7% to $513m and imports grew by 18.4% to $1.2b. Importantly, exports to Russia doubled in the first two months of the year.

Export rate falls in Kyrgyzstan

MAY 13 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) – Kyrgyzstan’s Statistics Committee said that revenues from exports fell by 25.8% to $287.1m in Q1 2016, compared to the same period last year. Notably, revenues from gold exports shrank by 2.6 times. Centerra Gold, the Canadian company exploiting the Kumtor gold mine, had said that delays in shipments had hit sales. Kumtor is Kyrgyzstan’s largest asset.
