Uzbek court troubles MTS

SEP. 17 2012 (The Conway Bulletin) – A court in Uzbekistan has sentenced four managers at Uzdunrobita, a subsidiary of Russian mobile operator MTS, to up to 2-1/2 years in prison, media quoted MTS as saying. Uzbek officials have confiscated Uzdunrobita’s property and cancelled its licence. They said Uzdunrobita has avoided paying taxes and broken its contract.

Turkmenistan to increase gas production

SEP. 14 2012 (The Conway Bulletin) – Turkmenistan plans to produce 250b cubic metres (bcm) of gas by 2030, up from an earlier 230bcm estimate, media reported. Turkmenistan already produces 75bcm of gas. The estimate is based on tapping reserves and underlines the country’s status as a leading gas producer.

Turkmenistan to construct oil refinery

SEP. 14 2012 (The Conway Bulletin) – Turkmenistan has started preparations to construct an oil refinery near the Caspian Sea, media reported. The refinery will be Turkmenistan’s third and have an initial capacity of 3m tonnes of crude oil a year. A feasibility study is being prepared and construction work could start in 2015.

India invests into Azerbaijani energy

SEP. 9 2012 (The Conway Bulletin) – In a $1b deal, ONGC Videsh, the overseas investment arm of India’s state-owned energy company ONGC, bought nearly 3% of the Azeri, Chirag and Guneshli (ACG) group of oil fields in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea and a similar size stake in the Baku-Tbilisi- Ceyhan (BTC) oil pipeline, media reported.

Uzbekistan seizes MTS assets

SEP. 2 2012 (The Conway Bulletin) – A court in Uzbekistan ordered the authorities to seize the assets of Russian mobile operator MTS’s local subsidiary, Uzdunrobita, media reported. The Uzbek authorities accuse Uzdunrobita of tax evasion and breaking its contract. Uzdunrobita denies the charges and says the government is trying to steal its assets.

MTS woes hit profit in Uzbekistan

AUG. 28 2012 (The Conway Bulletin) – Russian mobile operator MTS said that a row with the Uzbek authorities had knocked $1.1b off its profit in the second quarter of the year. Earlier this month a court in Uzbekistan revoked MTS’s operating licence. MTS had over 9m subscribers in Uzbekistan. It has said the move is an attempt to steal its business.

Protesters foil mining tender in Kyrgyzstan

AUG. 28 2012 (The Conway Bulletin) – Nationalist protesters broke into a TV studio in Bishkek shortly before it was due to stage Kyrgyzstan’s first live auction of mining rights. Scuffles broke out and the auction had to be abandoned, dealing another blow to Kyrgyzstan’s foreign investor image.

MTS returns to Turkmenistan

AUG. 20 2012 (The Conway Bulletin) – Russian mobile phone operator, MTS, said it would resume work in Turkmenistan from the start of September. Through its local subsidiary, MTS had an 85% share of the Turkmen mobile market before the government abruptly cancelled is licence at the end of 2010.

Oil production in Azerbaijan drops by 11.6%

AUG. 16 2012 (The Conway Bulletin) – Upgrade work to extend the life-span of oil fields operated by the BP-lead Azerbaijan International Operating Company (AIOC) caused production to drop by 11.6% to a five year low in the first half of 2012, media quoted company officials as saying. AIOC accounts for most of Azerbaijan’s oil production.

Uzbek court bans MTS

AUG. 13 2012 (The Conway Bulletin) – A court in Uzbekistan has cancelled all licences held by the Russian mobile operator MTS, which operates under the local brand Uzdunrobita, media reported. Uzbek officials had previously slapped temporary bans on MTS for alleged tax dodging the breaking its contract. MTS denies the allegations.
