NOV. 28 2022 (The Bulletin) — Uzbekistan intends to build a high-speed train to Nukus, part of its nationwide modernisation project. The project comes with a political edge too as the restive Karakalpakstan is considered remote and underdeveloped. Several people died this year in major unrest in Nukus, the capital of Karakalpakstan. Uzbek officials want to develop the region. The project to build a high speed train between Urgench and Nukus will cost around $445m. Half is being paid by the Asian Development Bank.
