Turkmen president fires cousin after drunken fight

NOV. 30 2022 (The Bulletin) — Turkmen President Serdar Berdymukhamedov took the unusual step of reprimanding a relative. Media reported that he had sacked one of his cousins, named as Akhmet Geldymuradov, as deputy chairman of Turkmengsas because he had been involved in a fight in a bar. Asia-Plus said that Mr Geldymuradov had been “relaxing at an elite resort” but had gotten into a “state of extreme intoxication… and broken a bottle on the head of a high-ranking prosecutor”. The reports were a rare insight into Turkmenistan’s elite.
