Georgia passes first reading of “foreign agents” law

APRIL 17 2024 (The Bulletin) — Georgia’s parliament on Wednesday approved the first reading of a “foreign agents” law that will increase monitoring of Western-funded NGOs and media groups.

The Georgian Dream, which dominates parliament, has said that the law is needed to improve transparency. Opposition activists have said that it is inspired by the Kremlin and will be used to crush dissent.

On Tuesday evening, riot police cleared demonstrators in front of parliament with water cannons and pepper spray.
