DEC. 7 2022 (The Bulletin) — Kazatomprom, Kazakhstan’s atomic agency, sent its first batch of low-grade enriched uranium to China to fuel nuclear power stations under a deal initially signed in 2014. Kazakhstan is the world’s largest producer of uranium but previously hadn’t had the facilities to enrich it. Under the 2014 deal, China invested $435m into enrichment facilities at Ulba in northeast Kazakhstan and also guaranteed a market for 20 years.
