BISHKEK/JAN. 11 (The Bulletin) – Sadar Japarov, who was only sprung from prison in a coup in October, has won a landslide victory in Kyrgyzstan’s presidential election, the Kyrgyz Central Election Commission said on Monday.
With nearly 90% of the votes counted, the Kyrgyz CEC, said that Japarov, who has been Acting President since the coup, had won with more than 81% of the vote. Also on Jan. 10, people were asked to vote on changes to Kyrgyzstan’s constitution, bolstering the president and weakening parliament. These changes, backed by Japarov, are also likely to be approved.
